Suspected Armed Robbers Who Attacked Cocoa Merchant And His Son Arrested In Ogun
The suspects identified as as Olumide Ifelowo, Abiodun Bayegun and Fatai Sowunmi launched an attack on on Isaiah Sowunmi and his son, Abiodun Sowunmi at Ogunmakin area of the state, in an attempt to dispossess them of their valuables.
It was gathered that a distress call put through to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Owode Egba, CSP Sheu Alao, who went with a police team to the scene of the incident led to the arrest of Ifelowo.
The victim, Sowunmi, was said to have identified Ifelowo as the one who shot at his son. Upon interrogation, Ifelowo reportedly confessed that he and one Jeje were invited for the robbery by Bayegun and Fatai.
He said further that Fatai provided them information that the victim had a lot of money as a cocoa merchant. His confession led to the arrest of Bayegun and Fatai, while a cut-to-size shotgun loaded with a live cartridge was recovered from them.
The victim of the attack, Abiodun was taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical care. The state commissioner of police, Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) unit for discreet investigation.
2 Queen’s College Girls Die After Eating Spaghetti, School Shut Down
Two students of the elite secondary
school for girls in Nigeria, Queen’s
College, Yaba, in Lagos, have died after
eating Spaghetti served from the
school’s Refectory by the college cooks.
Following the death of the students, the
school was shut down by the
management.
The two female boarding students,
Vivian Osuinyi and Bithia Itulua
reportedly died between Thursday,
February 23 and Friday, February 24,
2017, after prolonged vomiting and
stooling.
They had allegedly eaten Spaghetti and
drank water served in the Refectory.
The school sent the students home on
the directive of officials from the
Federal Ministry of Health and their
colleagues from Lagos State who have
opened investigations into the deaths.
Already, the officials from the Federal
Ministry are in the school, to determine
what allegedly caused the deaths of the
two female students.
Following outbreak of diarrhoea in the
school, parents, whose wards resumed
on Monday, contacted officials of the
Parents Teacher Association (PTA), to
find out the situation of things.
Only Senior Secondary III students
resumed on Monday, to complete their
examinations while the junior students
were expected in school next week, but,
with the outbreak of diarrhoea and the
directive by health officials to send the
students home, it will affect the
resumption of other students.
Some parents told Daily Sun, yesterday,
that the school management ought to
have taken pre-emptive measures
when, a month ago, some students
started vomiting and stooling in the
dormitory and were rushed to the
sickbay by their colleagues.
According to the Daily Sun, a senior staff
confirmed that health officials have
directed that the SS III students be sent
home to enable Lagos State health
officials investigate the source of the
diarrhoea as well as carry out
environment assessment of the school.
“As soon the SS III students finish their
Mathematics examination, today, they
will go home. We have informed parents
about their coming home. The health
officials insisted the students must
vacate the college to allow for thorough
investigation.”
The staff, however, added that, “some
parents are just blowing the issue out of
proportion. The issue started a month
ago when some students complained and
were treated at the sickbay and two
weeks ago, a student vomited and
stooled and she died later. The new old
girls association president called the
principal to inform her of another death
which we are yet to confirm.’’
Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole
also visited the school.
It was gathered that Lagos State
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris
called to instruct that health officials be
allowed to carry out their investigation.
Arsenal Fan 'Boy-Yo' Murdered In Ogoni, Rivers State By Gunmen
An indigene of Ogoni in Rivers State, was
gunned down by unknown gunmen few
hours ago. The notorious cultist
identified as Boy-yo is suspected to have
been killed by members of a rival cult
group.
According to Baridam Ben who shared
the story, this happens everyday in the
oil rich town of Rivers State. He also
advised Ogoni youths to shun cultism
and embrace their potentials. Here's
what he wrote;
'Crime does not pay.Ogoni boys should
wise up. This is the lifeless body of Boy-
Yo, gunned down few minutes ago by
gunmen. It is painful because he had
great promises, great potentials, great
energy, but has been swallowed by the
street. Ogoni boys should know that the
Rivers State government is not
interested in their well-being, so use
your energy for productive ventures and
not militancy and cultism. This is a sad
day for every street boy in Bori because
this is someone we all know, and it is a
sad reminder of everything that is
wrong about the street. Countless of
people like this are dying every single
day in Ogoni land, but who the fuck even
cares? Give his death a meaning by
using it as a lesson and stay out of
trouble.Rest In Peace Boy-Yo. Arsenal

"Osinbajo Is Better Than Buhari, Take It Or Leave It" – PDP Youths
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Youth
Frontier (PDPYF) has fired back at the
Presidency for branding as “mischief
makers” Nigerians who hold the
opinion that Acting-President, Yemi
Osinbajo, within 40 days has performed
better than President Muhammadu
Buhari did in 20 months.
The opposition youth group, in a
sarcastic series of tweets published on
its official twitter handle (@PDPNYF),
challenged the claims made by
President Muhammadu Buhari’s
political adviser, Babafemi Ojudu, that
the peace-building efforts of the
federal government in the Niger-Delta
and the recent measures put in place to
arrest the downward slipping of the
Naira against the Dollar in the parallel
market were directives Buhari gave
from London.
They insisted that President Buhari’s
cabal was the problem plaguing the
country.
The PDP youths said: “The tide
suddenly changed when President
Muhammadu Buhari travelled out for
health vacation. Nigerians are
convinced and his version of the APC is
the problem.
“Buhari that was well and couldn’t
address the Naira exchange rate to
Dollar now giving such instructions
from the sick bed? Impossible.
“Buhari that was well and okay and
couldn’t pay a visit to Niger Delta now
giving instructions to Prof. Yemi
Osinbajo to take such action. Drama.”

24 Hours Later Body Of An Accident Victim Still Lies At Same Spot In Ibadan
According to Kehinde who witnessed the accident, residents of the area seem not to care about
the lifeless body of the deceased, as they went about their normal business like nothing happened.
Here's what he wrote;
"Ok this is serious...I closed from work and witnessed an accident around 8:40pm yesterday, old man was knocked down by one okada rider at this very busy dugbe junction in ibadan, OYO state....OK 24hrs later I came back to pay "Nepa bills" exactly 11:15am at that same junction and to my greatest surprise I found the lifeless body of that man still lying there and nobody seems to care about it."

Policemen Flee, Removes Uniform As Robbers Storm Bank In Delta State
According to eyewitnesses, the 8:15a.m incident left them defenseless as policemen attached to the bank, fled the scene while 3 of them removed their uniform, as the men of the underworld who
came in a blue golf car struck their first shot as the deceased arrived the bank in a tricycle (keke-napep),.
“Three of them sat close to my shop for hours, before a man was coming towards the bank and they quickly walked towards the man (victim) who carried a black bagco bag of money and started dragging the bag with him at gun point while urging him to release the bag.
“We saw them dragging the money with the man, I thought it was one of the movie scenes, you know these Nollywood people do use Asaba very well for acting movies.
“But before we knew it, they shot the man. It was at this point that everyone, including the policemen took to our heel while the victim held on the bag of money and struggled into the bank where he fell on the ground.
The bank thieves left the money bag which the deceased held on to after he was shot and drove off immediately. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC).
“They were in the car for sometime before the car refused to start to immediately. But nobody, not even armed policemen who had removed their uniforms dared to challenged them until they finally zoomed” the eyewitness who pleaded anonymity added.
The Sun reports that the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, has confirmed the incident, and also said the incident was already being investigated.
Those Rating Osinbajo Higher Than Buhari Want To Cause Division - Presidency
The Political Adviser to the President
in the Office of the Vice President,
Senator Femi Ojudu made the remarks
while fielding questions from State
House correspondents on the
speculations making the rounds,
preferring Osinbajo’s style of
governance to Buhari’s on Monday in
Abuja.
It will be recalled that Osinbajo has
been piloting the affairs of the country
since January 19 when President
Buhari jetted out to London, United
Kingdom on medical vacation.
.
Since his departure, Osinbajo has
apparently taken a couple of
initiatives that had elicited hopes that
Nigeria may get out of its present
state of economic recession sooner
than expected.
One of those decisions was a directive
to the governor of the Central Bank of
Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele to
review the country’s foreign exchange
policy which seems to be producing
results at the moment, judging from
the Naira value appreciation over the
Dollar.
Osinbajo had earlier also forwarded
the name of the Acting Chief Justice of
Nigeria, Walter Oonneghen to the
Senate for confirmation contrary to
the Buhari’s perceived reluctance since
appointing the CJN in acting capacity in
November, 2016.
Reacting to trend of comparing the
President and his Vice, Ojudu said it
was completely unfounded.
He said: “I think it is thoughtless. I also
see it as a ploy by the opposition to
cause an unnecessary division. It is a
joint ticket. The president and the vice
president were elected based on the
manifesto of the party and since they
were sworn-in, they have been
committed to implementing that
manifesto.
“The same people who said we never
had economic team, no policy, nothing,
are the ones saying this. It is now the
policies we are implementing are
maturing and they are seeing the
result. It is not a question of one
person being better than the other
person.
“I will give you an example, there is
nothing that has been done since the
vice president started acting that is not
something that started far back in the
past. A good example is the Niger
Delta initiative. The President called
the Vice President and said I am giving
you the mandate, go into the Niger
Delta, meet with everyone who is a
stakeholder, all the communities, talk
to the militants and make sure you
solve this problem for the benefits of
Nigerians.
“We are losing 1.2 million barrels of oil
per day. All the gas pipelines powering
the turbines are being blown up. And
the President has said unless and until
we resolve this problem, we will not
get out of recession. The VP took up
the mandate and went to the Niger
Delta. It is the initiative of Mr.
President not that of Vice President.
“This is mischief makers, those who do
not wish this country well, who are
always promoting crisis, who will not
allow the people to benefit from this
democracy are the ones promoting
this kind of divisive tendencies.”
He said that the Acting President on
some occasions consult the President
even as he refused to accept that
Osinbajo was not in charge.
“Almost on a daily basis, yes. Well,
there are things he still needs to
consult the President. I mean it is not a
regular thing but major decisions he
still has to consult Mr. President. The
president is still the president.
”He is in charge but like I said earlier
on, this is a joint ticket the president of
Nigeria remains the president of
Nigeria. He is acting because it is one
and the same. He is more experienced,
he has been in the game longer than
the vice president and if there are
major issues that he needs to take
decision on, he could call on him and
say Sir, what do you think about this
we are about to take decision on it. Do
you have opinion? That does not mean
he is not in charge.”
But reminded that Nigerians other
than partisan opposition politicians
were the ones making the
comparisons, Ojudu maintained his
position of oneness.
”Again, one other thing you have to
see is that if you give someone a
responsibility, he must be able to show
to Mr. President that despite that he is
not being around is not going to create
any vacuum. He can then decide not to
sleep at all, all through the time the
president is a way just to show him
that he is capable of ensuring that
Nigeria goes on well while he is away.
“And the President could also have
given the mandate let nothing go
wrong, I believe in you, I appointed you
as my Vice President you must make
sure that you do this. If you have a
boss who gives you an assignment you
will want to impress him and Nigerians
as well and that for me is what has
happened. It is not that one person is
better than the other, certainly not.
“I’m telling that I have seen some
things sent out intentionally to cause
some kind of division within the
presidency. Some people who have
been condemning everybody in the
past, I see them on twitter and on
facebook and generally on social
media. Some people are trying to
promote division and we are not going
to allow that. This president and vice
president worked together in tandem
and I know they both have confidence
in this nation”, he said.
Also asked to react to the concerns in
Katsina State that the president was
poisoned, the Political Adviser said it
was stupid to believe such stories.
“The way I will react to that is that
those of you in the media should be
careful what you pick from the social
media now. It is becoming a factory for
fake news in the Nigeria. A lot of
things you see on social media can
never be true. I saw that, I read it and I
assessed it using the prism of these
factors, those indices we use to
analysis stories in the media and found
out that, that it cannot be true.
“For example they said somebody
kept N77 trillion somewhere, imagine
that. What is the total value of
Nigeria’s economy that because of
somebody keeping N77 trillion
therefore some people want to poison
him so that they can inherit the
money.
“I mean we have a president that
nobody in this country can question his
integrity. As a young officer, a middle
officer, a senior officer and as a Head
of State till now, nobody has been able
to tarnish his image or come up with
anything. For me, it is not even worth
responding to, as soon as I read it, I
dismissed it, it is so ridiculous.
Again it is the handiwork of our
enemies, the problem is fakeness has
almost become global and universal,
other countries are experiencing it.
Those who want to destabilize the
country, they come up with all kinds of
stupid stories, some kind of
unimaginable stories. So we should
just discountenance those things”, he
said.
Man Dies In Lover's Apartment In Ogun, Lover & Friends Dump His Body In A Bush
The police in Ogun State have arrested
three women over the mysterious
death of the lover of one of them in
Mamugba community, Sagamu Local
Government Area of the state.
The spokesperson of the police in the
state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who
confirmed the arrests to PREMIUM
TIMES on Monday, said the suspects
connived to dump the remains of the
victim in the bush.
He said, the man had visited to spend
the night with his lover, identified as
Rukayat Bashorun, but died in a
mysterious manner.
“The Ogun State police command has
arrested three women namely:
Rukayat Basorun 37, Omobola
Shodimu, and Aanu Owoade, for
murder. The suspects were arrested
when information got to the police
that they secretly dumped a corpse in
a bush”, he stated.
The police spokesperson added that
the Divisional Police Officer for Ogijo,
Tijani Mohammed, who received the
information led his officials to the area
at Mamugba village, Simawa where
the main suspect, Ms. Basorun, was
arrested.
“Investigation revealed that the
deceased happened to be Rukayat’s
lover who came to spend some time
with her but died in suspicious
circumstances in the house of the
suspect.
“Rukayat then connived with her two
other accomplices to take the body
and dump it in the bush”, he
emphasised.
Mr. Oyeyemi said, on interrogation,
Ms. Basorun confessed that the
deceased was her man friend who
went to visit her but suddenly fell sick.
“She stated further that she took him
to a private hospital but the money
charged by the hospital was too much
for her to pay which made her to take
him to an undisclosed clinic where she
said the man gave up the ghost”, he
stated.
“When asked the reason why she
decided to dump the corpse in the
bush, she could not give any
reasonable response”, Mr. Oyeyemi
stated.
The police spokesperson said the
corpse had been recovered and
deposited at Olabisi Onabanjo
University Teaching Hospital mortuary
in Sagamu for autopsy.
He said the Commissioner of Police,
Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered the
immediate transfer of the suspects to
the Homicide Section of the State
Criminal Investigation and Intelligence
Department for further investigation.

Tinubu Prepares To Run For Presidency In 2019, Lists Running Mates - ThisDay
The National Leader of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), Chief
Bola Tinubu, has been holding a series
of meetings and consultations for his
bid for the presidency in 2019,
THISDAY has reliably learnt.
According to sources close to the
former Lagos State governor, he is also
putting together a team, preparatory
for the race and has developed an
elaborative strategic plan to make a
bold bid for the coveted office.
In so doing, Tinubu, sources confirmed,
has abandoned his initial plan of
aligning with the opposition Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) to build a
mega party to take on the APC in 2019.
Instead, Tinubu, the sources
volunteered, has decided to remain in
the APC, a party that he played a
pivotal role setting up in 2013 and
leading it to a historic victory in the
2015 elections.
Tinubu had hinted of his interest to
contest for the presidency in Akure last
Friday when he told reporters during
the inauguration of the new governor
of Ondo State, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu
(SAN), that he could run for the office
in 2019.
“There is nothing wrong with such
ambition,” he said, adding: “It depends
on the timing, the environment and
what the political leadership dictates. I
will not brush aside such an aspiration.”
Following his brushes with the
leadership of the APC and his
perceived marginalisation in the
Muhammadu Buhari administration, he
was said to have opted for building a
huge alliance, using the PDP and some
other parties to form a new mega
party that would serve as a
counterweight to the ruling APC and
wrest power from it in 2019.
But Tinubu, according to sources, has
had a change of mind and has decided
not to leave a house he helped to build
for others.
Although Buhari’s absence and
concerns over his health, which may
rule him out of the contest in 2019,
may have played a role in Tinubu’s
decision to contest for the presidency
on the platform of the APC, sources
informed THISDAY that the former
Lagos governor’s mind is made up to
make a go for the presidency.
According to a source in the know,
“Asiwaju would actually prefer that the
president recovers and returns hale
and hearty, but he does not seek a
second term.
“But even if Buhari decides to seek a
second term, Asiwaju’s mind is made
up, as he will contest for the post in the
APC under any circumstances.
“He is tired of being a kingmaker and
has decided that he will contest under
any prevailing circumstances.”
In this regard, the source said Tinubu
remains on course to build a strong
counter force within the APC, first in
South-west, by stepping up his efforts
to reconcile with all his erstwhile
political associates, including former
Governors Segun Osoba and Gbenga
Daniel, as well as other political
leaders like Ekiti State Governor,
Ayodele Fayose.
His goal, according to THISDAY sources,
is that a reinvigorated alliance in the
South-west would help him checkmate
his estranged younger associates,
including former Governors Kayode
Fayemi and Babatunde Fashola, as well
as Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun
State, who he believes are being used
to clip his political influence in the
region.
With the South-west tidied up, the
presidential aspirant is said to be
consulting widely in the North, reaching
out to the region’s political
heavyweights and sourcing for
alliances that will strengthen his hand
in building a strong base in that part of
the country.
Already, Tinubu’s team has pencilled
down three names as possible running
mates, a source close to the APC leader
disclosed.
They are Governor Aminu Tambuwal
of Sokoto State due to name
recognition and political considerations;
Senator Abu Ibrahim who represents
Buhari’s Katsina South Senatorial
District, to placate the president’s
people and power bloc; and possibly
the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad
Sanusi II, his well-known political
associate and an expert on economic
reforms that could prove very useful
to a Tinubu presidency.
However, as Buhari’s absence opens
the field for contenders for the
presidency on the platform of the APC,
his aide responsible for political affairs,
Babafemi Ojudu, has raised the alarm
over an alleged plot by those in the
opposition to cause a division between
Buhari and his deputy, Professor Yemi
Osinbajo.
Naira Strengthens To N435/$ On CBN Dollar Glut
The naira continued to strengthen on
the parallel market on Monday to
close at N435 to the dollar, stronger
than N450 to the dollar at which it
closed last Friday, as the Central Bank
of Nigeria (CBN) continued to
relentlessly pump the greenbank into
the interbank foreign exchange
market to meet the demand of bank
customers.
But the buy rate of the greenback rose
slightly to N430 to the dollar Monday,
against N440 last Friday.
Several parallel market operators
who had been stockpiling dollars for
months, were seen lamenting that the
CBN’s intervention was forcing them to
offload their dollars at a loss.
But as they bemoaned their losses,
market analysts cautioned that they
were likely to incur more losses, as the
CBN, in keeping with its determination
to increase liquidity in the FX market
Monday pumped a fresh $180 million
into the interbank market.
A breakdown of this amount showed
that the CBN sold $100 million through
its special wholesale intervention
forwards and pumped an additional
$80 million to the banks, specifically
for school fees, medicals, and Business
and Personal Travel Allowanced,
among other invisible transactions.
CBN also said it would with “immediate
effect give Travelex $4 million weekly
to satisfy demand for travel
allowances at the Lagos and Abuja
airports”.
In a statement released Monday, the
CBN’s acting Director, Corporate
Communications, Mr. Isaac Okorafor,
said the central bank’s commitment to
providing enough FX for legitimate
business remains unshaken,
reiterating that it would do
“everything possible” to maintain the
steady supply of forex to the market.
In all, the new FX measures introduced
by the CBN aimed at improving
liquidity in market has led to the
appreciation of the naira by N85 in just
one week.
Analysts are projecting that the naira
might appreciate to about N400 to the
dollar on the parallel market this
week, effectively meeting the CBN’s
objective of closing the gap between
interbank and parallel market rates.
The CBN had maintained that much of
the dollar demand was a bubble
created by speculators and hoarders
of the greenback.
Also, speaking on a programme
monitored on Raypower FM in Lagos
Monday, Okorafor urged currency
dealers and others hoarding dollars to
make hay and sell their holdings in
order to avoid heavy losses.
He added: “I want to assure that we
would provide enough liquidity in the
market and we will sustain liquidity in
the market. The country is opening up
and foreign reserves are improving.
Many people outside are beginning to
realise the huge opportunities in this
country.
“You can see the subscription of the
Eurobond. It clearly shows the
potential in this economy. This
economy is bottomless when it comes
to investment opportunities.
“So, ultimately, the exchange rate
would improve and anybody hoarding
dollars would suffer for it.”
Responding to a question on the
impact of the continuing ban of 41
items from accessing the official FX
market, the CBN spokesman said: “The
savings we have made from the
elimination of the 41 items from the
FX market have been very huge.
“Nigerians are beginning to adapt to
made-in-Nigeria products and indeed
we have supported some local
manufacturers.
“Apart from rice, we are funding the
production of palm oil and other
produce.
“We have two firms now producing
toothpicks in Nigeria. So, you can see
that even though people criticised the
removal of the 41 items, which is one
thing that we held on to, to change the
entire economic landscape of this
country.
“No country is known to have
succeeded or became great by
depending on outsiders for its food,
fashion, drinks, and others. We cannot
continue like that.
“We must change our appetite for
foreign goods and services. We are
determined to fund the FX market.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s external
reserves increased further to $29.414
billion, according to latest figures
made available by the CBN.

FIRS Seals Kabo Airlines, Others Over N200 Million Tax Liabilities
Kabo Airlines owes N149,707,949.03 from the assessment year of 2004 to 2013. According to the head of the enforcement team in Kano, Bukar Gana, the airline’s liabilities are made up of Income Tax (IT) and Education Tax (ET). He explained that the company did not contest the liabilities, an action which led to the sealing of its premises on Ashton Road, Kano State.
Also sealed was Paki International Motors, which owes Company Income Tax (CIT) totaling N51,148,117.57, accumulated between 2008 and 2014.
The enforcement similarly sealed Prince Hotel (Sojuna Hotel) over N8,359, 680.76 liability from 2014 to 2016. In its defence, the hotel management pleaded that the default was as a result of non-disclosure of the liability by the company’s tax auditor. It promised to pay 50 percent of the liability immediately and the remaining in April.
Phamadex Nigeria Limited, which owes withholding tax amounting to N572,331,.72 from 2014 to 2015 assessment year, presented evidence of payment of the liability. However, the company was yet to pay the penalty and interest that had accrued on the liability. The team gave the company the grace to pay up within 24 hours.
The FIRS team also visited the premises of Monaco Ventures Limited over an Education Tax debt of N385,922.50. The company was also sealed up by the team. The enforcement exercise continues in other parts of the country.

25 INEC Officials In Hospital After Rivers Rerun Attack
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday said more than 25 of its staff members were receiving medical attention as a result of attacks suffered during Saturday’s supplementary election in Etche local government area of Rivers state.
In an interview with NAN in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Aniedi Ikoiwak, resident electoral commissioner (REC) blamed the attacks on the people of Rivers.
He said one of the victims just regained consciousness on Sunday.
“This is one area that Nigerians should ask questions: over 25 INEC staff members are in hospital today because the people of Rivers state decided to either kill or wound them,” he said.
“They were all beaten up because they went to those villages to conduct an election.
“Let the people of Rivers state tell us the offence any of them committed. What did they do? They were bringing materials for the election; they decided to descend on them, beat them up, collect their personal belongings and run away.”
Ikoiwak noted that the victims were on official duty and needed a peaceful environment to achieve success.
He called on Nigerians to condemn the alleged attack.
“It is very sad. None of them was beaten up in his home but where they went to conduct an election,” he said.
“Why shouldn’t Nigerians discuss that? Why should people sent to conduct an election be beaten up and their belongings taken away from them?”
But Nyesom Wike, governor of the state, has described the election as one of the most peaceful in the history of the state.
Speaking at a church service in Port Harcourt, Wike commended security operatives for the role they played in the exercise.
“For the first time, I want to commend the security operatives in the state. If they have been doing this way, we wouldn’t have been having problems in this state,” he said.
“This is the first election I have seen in my life, since this government came, that you don’t see too much involvement of security operatives and that is why nobody has died, that’s why the election went on peacefully.
“I told the opposition party, because security is not interfering, that’s why you can’t get one seat. If they were carrying [electoral] materials as they used to do before, they would have allocated some seats.
“So, I want to commend them.”
About 700 staff members of INEC were mobilised for the supplementary legislative election in Etche.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had withdrawn from assisting INEC in the election due to security issues.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious in the exercise.

Hijackers Hit Tanker Escort’s Head With Hammer, Divert Multi-million Naira Product
Operatives of Rapid Response Squad of
the Lagos State Police Command have
arrested 12 suspects over an attempted
murder of a tanker escort and the
diversion of a 45,000 litre diesel laden
truck and 410 bags of flour.
The incident happened on 1 February,
2017 when the truck with the
registration number ENU 751 XH
conveying 45,000 litres of diesel it
loaded at Optima Depot, Koko, Warri in
Delta State was hijacked after some
suspects hit the truck pilot, Tunji Ajayi
with hammer at the back of the head
and threw him into a ditch.
The diversion was reported at the Rapid
Response Squad’s Headquarters in
Alausa, where it was reported that the
officials declined to take up the case
over jurisdiction. It was further revealed
that the Lagos State Commissioner of
Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni on hearing of
the incident directed that the police
swing into action immediately, noting
that crime has no jurisdiction.
The operatives, in handling the case
spent 11 days shuttling Ondo, Ogun,
Lagos and Edo States and picking up all
the suspects allegedly involved in the
diversion of the diesel and 410 bags of
flour.
As at Sunday, the operatives had
arrested 23 people directly involved in
the attempted murder of Tunji Ajayi, the
representative of Samsuat Petroleum,
the diversion, buyers and sub – buyers
of the products.
The complainant, Mrs. Nafisat Osinowo,
in her statement at the RRS’s Office in
Alausa, Ikeja, stated, “the diesel was
meant to be delivered in Sango, Ogun
State. Our representative escorting the
truck called me when they got to Benin
that the tyre of the truck was not good
in the afternoon.
“He called again at 11:00 p.m. that the
truck has been parked in Ore. It is our
tradition not to travel at night. Our
discussion was that they proceed on the
journey at 5:00 a.m. the next day. That
was the last time we spoke. Efforts to
get him the following day proved
abortive until few days later when we
were called that he was in an intensive
care unit at the hospital”.
Sources revealed that Gbenga
Akinboyewa (33) and Obinna Ofunue
(29) were recruited by a syndicate in
connivance with the driver of the diesel
truck, Amara (now at large) to eliminate
Tunji Ajayi, the representative of the
owner of the product.
The trio had at Ore at night, engaged
Ajayi, overpowered him before hitting
him at the back of the head with a
hammer. They were reported to have
thereafter dropped his body in a ditch
along the road before diverting the
truck with the 45,000 diesel.
The syndicate, led by Chibueze Nnamdi,
a building materials dealer in Ore, Ondo
State, Edwin Ozor, Oluchukwu and one
Shedrach, now at large, had raised N800,
000:00 to pay for the services of those
engaged in the course of the diesel
diversion.
According to Nnmadi, “I invited
Akinboyewa into the deal. I briefed him
and he in turn invited Ofunue. The
instruction we gave them was to tie the
hands and legs of the escort and hide
him somewhere so that within an hour,
we would have closed the deal before he
was loose. I didn’t say they should kill
him.
“Biggy (Ozor) and I raised N800, 000 to
settle the boys, lodge them in a hotel,
feed and take care of other emergencies
in the course of the job. We promised
Akinbiyewa N500, 000 for his own aspect
of the job”.
He disclosed further, “when we were in
control of the truck, we drove to Ijebu
Ode, where we discharged 2,800 litres.
We proceeded to Lagos, where we
offloaded 19,200 in one station, 14,000
in another and 8,400 in the last filling
station.
Those equally arrested in connection
with the attempted murder and diesel
diversions were: Sadiku Ganinu,
Oluchukwu Oyema and Gbenga Aliyu.
Meanwhile, the operatives have also
uncovered that the same syndicate had
sometime last week facilitated the
disposal off 410 bags of flour believed to
belong to Dangote Flour.
Sources revealed that one of the
suspects, whose name was not
mentioned, disclosed to the police that
the syndicate had a week ago, disposed
a truck load of flour.
The revelation prompted further
investigations by the operatives, which
led the RRS team to Sagamu, Ogun
State, where the buyer of the flour,
Rabiu Bello was arrested.
Bello, a Colanut dealer, had in his
statement stated that one Mustapha (at
large) brought the flour deal to him,
adding that, he bought each bag of the
flour N8500.
He further stated that he in turn sold the
flour in Zamfara at N9500 per bag.
Others involved in the flour deal and
arrested by the operatives included:
Chigozie Obi, Feranmi Michael and
Adedeji Kehinde.
All the suspects have been transferred
to the State Criminal Investigation
Department, Panti.
Rivers Re-run: APC Rejects INEC Declaration Of PDP As Winner
Rivers State Chapter of the All
Progressives Congress, APC, has rejected
Etche State Constituency and Etche/
Omuma Federal Constituency rerun
election results declared by the
Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC).
A statement by Rivers State APC
Chairman, Davies Ikanya, said the party
was taken aback when it was reported
that the National Electoral Commissioner
in charge of Bayelsa, Edo and Rivers
states, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, had
ordered that the incomplete results be
declared despite the earlier declaration
by the two Returning Officers on
Saturday at Okehi that the elections were
inconclusive.
The statement noted that “The APC
vehemently rejects the results as
declared today (Sunday) at the State
INEC Office in Port Harcourt. This action
by INEC runs counter and contradictory to
earlier announcement on Saturday by
the aforementioned Returning Officers
who are the duly empowered persons to
make such declarations.
“What INEC did today is a rape on
democracy and the APC will surely resist
it with every legal window available to it.
INEC can only do what it did today
because Gov. Nyesom Wike has, as usual,
generously compromised key officials of
INEC in Rivers State.
“The APC notes that despite the general
outcry concerning Gov. Nyesom Wike’s
interference in the electoral process, the
governor physically held hostage a
Returning Officer to force him announce
results in a manner unbecoming of a
governor. We condemn this and call on
INEC leadership and security agencies to
investigate this unfortunate incidence.
“We recall that this same compromised
INEC in Rivers State embarked on the
now infamous 2015 elections which is
unarguably the worst election in the
annals of Nigeria. During the December
10, 2016 rerun that followed, INEC
continued to exhibit unwarranted
contradictions and unwholesome
mishandling of the process which resulted
in the further rescheduling of the rerun
elections for Etche State Constituency
and Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency.
Sadly, INEC has, once again, bungled it.”
Ekiti PDP Senator Ignores Fayose, Declares Support For Sheriff
While the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo
Fayose, champions the movement against
Ali Sheriff as Peoples Democratic Party
chairman, a senator from his state has
declared full support for Mr. Sheriff.
Mr. Sheriff has been recognised as PDP
chairman by the Court of Appeal. But Mr.
Fayose, who heads the PDP Governors
Forum, and other party leaders have
restated their opposition to Mr. Sheriff
and vowed to appeal the judgement at
the Supreme Court.
However, on Sunday, Fatimat Raji-
Rasaki, who represents Ekiti Central
Senatorial District said Mr. Sheriff was
the authentic national chairman of the
PDP.
She made the declaration on Sunday in
Ado-Ekiti while speaking with journalists
at the end of a three-day capacity
building training on ICT she organised for
100 beneficiaries in her constituency.
Mrs. Raji-Rasaki’s declaration comes days
after another senator from Bayelsa
State, Ben Murray-Bruce also declared
support for Mr. Sheriff saying there was
no need for further litigations.
On Sunday, Mrs. Raji-Rasaki, who is the
Chairman, Senate Committee on Trade
and Investment, said the era of impunity
was dead in the PDP.
She said that the Court of Appeal
judgment which affirmed Mr. Sheriff as
the national chairman of PDP had
afforded the party an opportunity to put
its house in order.
The lawmaker, who belongs to a rival
PDP faction in Ekiti different from the
governor’s, said the recent developments
in Ekiti and at the national level, would
enable the PDP prepare ahead of the
2019 general elections.
She described the Court of Appeal
judgment as a “new lease of life’’ for
members of the party.
The senator, who distributed free laptops
to participants who attended the training,
stressed that anybody that wants to
make impact in today’s world must be
empowered technologically.
She urged the beneficiaries to put into
practice what they learnt at the training.
Mrs. Raji-Rasaki expressed sadness that
impunity, lawlessness, violation of the
PDP constitution and abuse of power by
people whose names she did not mention,
had negatively affected the party’s
fortunes before the judgment.
She expressed hope that the PDP would
emerge stronger from its crises to be a
party that would allow equity, justice,
fair play, adherence to due process and
the principles of democracy to thrive.
The senator expressed satisfaction that
the judiciary intervened and resolved the
protracted crises rocking the party.
She lauded the Ekiti chapter of the party
for affirming Williams Ajayi as the
authentic state chairman.
She alleged that some individuals in the
PDP had turned the party into their
personal property where party
congresses and primaries elections to
elect candidates were hijacked.
She added that members of the party
were not allowed to choose candidates of
their choice.
She said: “Crisis in any political party is
part of democracy because we disagree
to agree.
“We, the authentic PDP, are being led by
Ali Modu Sheriff and we thank God that
the court judgment has put an end to
impunity in our party.
“Impunity is one thing that destroys any
organisation or association where people
decide and subscribe to rules and
regulations guiding them.
“It is a pity that some people turned the
PDP to a place where one person will
corner everything and turn it to PLC.
“A party is supposed to be where
everybody has a say because we are in a
democracy.
“In Ekiti, the authentic executive has won
in court as well, so in the PDP, we have
Sheriff Asks Court To Jail Makarfi, FFK, Obi, Others Over Contempt
The National Chairman of the Peoples
Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu
Sheriff, has asked the Court of Appeal,
Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to jail his
arch rival, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, and
some of his loyalists.
Apart from the former governor of
Kaduna State, Sheriff, who is also a
former governor of Borno State, also
listed three other prominent leaders of
the party as those to be jailed by the
appellate court.
Sheriff and the National Secretary of
the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, accused
Makarfi and others of flouting the
order of the court, which was delivered
on February 17, 2017.
The court, in the judgment, had
pronounced Sheriff as the national
chairman of the party while it also
upheld that Oladipo remained its
national secretary.
Apart from Makarfi, others named as
alleged contemnors are the two other
members of the sacked National
Caretaker Committees, Senator Ben
Obi (secretary) and Mr. Dayo Adeyeye
(publicity secretary).
He also listed a former Minister of
Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode,
among the alleged contemnors.
Sheriff, in suit number FHC/ PH/
CS/524/16, asked the court to commit
the four persons to prison for one year
over the alleged contempt.
Apart from the four named above, the
PDP national chairman also listed a
former Deputy Speaker of House of
Representatives, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha; a
former Minister of Information, Prof.
Jerry Gana; Chairman, Board of
Trustees of the party, Senator Walid
Jibrin; and an aspirant to the office of
the party’s national chairman, Chief
Bode George, as alleged contemnors.
However, he did not pray the court to
commit Ihedioha, Gana, Jibrin and
George to prison, rather, he asked the
court for an order restraining them
from “proclaiming or otherwise holding
out to the public that the 1st to 3rd
alleged contemnors are national
officers of the PDP for any purpose
whatsoever.”
Listed as defendants in the case are the
PDP, the Independent National
Electoral Commission, the Inspector-
General of Police and the Department
of State Services.
The duo asked the court to stop
Makarfi and his group from parading
themselves as national officers of the
party.
They also asked the court to direct the
IGP and the DSS to close down the
factional secretariat being operated by
the Makarfi group.
Apart from that, they also asked the
court not to transmit the records of the
court proceedings to Markarfi and his
group, saying they didn’t have the
permission of the party to get it.
Oladipo, who signed an affidavit in
support of the claim, stated that on
February 17, “soon after the judgment
was delivered, the alleged contemnors
proceeded to address the media and to
comment negatively, contemptuously,
disparagingly and contumeliously on
the findings and order of the court set
out above.”
He added, “Rather than accept that the
justice of the matter as determined by
this honourable court was as expressed
in the findings, holdings and order set
out above, the 4th to 8th Alleged
Contemnors made statements
encouraging the 1st to 3rd respondents
to defy the order of the court and flout
the purpose of the court’s judgment
delivered on the 17th of February
2017.”
He said it was on this basis that the
alleged contemnors placed notices in
newspapers, where they convened a
meeting of what they called “PDP
stakeholders.”
He stated, “The said meeting was held
on Monday, February 20, and was
attended by the 4th to 8th alleged
contemnors, who made further
statements encouraging the 1st to 3rd
alleged contemnors to defy the
holdings and order of the court.”
The motion on notice for the committal
of the alleged contemnors was filed by
eight lawyers, led by a former Minister
of Justice, Akin Olujimi (SAN), who was
joined by two other SANs – Dr. Alex
Izinyon and B. E. Nwofor – among
others.
The lawyers said, “The actions of the
alleged contemnors, as shown in the
affidavit in support of this application,
have the effort of flouting the purpose
of the judgment of this Honourable
court, which purpose is to properly
regulate the exercise of powers by the
alleged contemnors against the
applicants and 1st Respondent; avoid
any further anarchy, lawlessness and
deepening crisis capable of heating up
the Nigerian polity; and establish the
requirements of the rule of law and
due process in the administration of
justice.
“Although the alleged contemnors
were not parties to the action in court,
it is our humble submission that they
have a responsibility to ensure that
they do not aid and abet the
disobedience of the judgment order or
treat the said judgment with disdain
and disrespect.”
Markarfi and the other faction of the
party are believed to have filed an
application seeking for stay of
execution of the judgment and leave
for appeal.
No date has been fixed for the hearing
of Sheriff’s case, which was filed on
February 24, 2017.
UK Okays Diezani’s Trial For ‘money Laundering
All is set for the trial of a former Minister
of Petroleum Resources Mrs. Diezani
Alison-Madueke, and four others in
London for alleged corrupt practices.
The trial has been fixed for June and
more evidence were hauled to the United
Kingdom at the weekend.
Part of the evidence are the proceedings
of a Federal High Court in respect of the
order of final forfeiture of $153million
allegedly traced to the ex-minister.
It was also learnt that one of the suspects
had been found at a hideout in London
and placed under surveillance.
There have been reports that the
Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) was negotiating with
Mrs. Alison-Madueke. The EFCC
yesterday said it was not engaged in any
secret negotiation with her.
According to a source in the anti-graft
agency, who spoke in confidence with our
correspondent, the agency is set for the
trial.
The source said: “The UK investigators
have gone far on the allegations against
Diezani. From the records made
available, the ex-minister and four
others will face trial as from June.
“We have taken more evidence to the UK,
including all court records relating to the
final forfeiture of $153million. We have a
huge pile of documents.”
Responding to a question, the source
added: “In fact, one of the suspects on the
radar of investigators has been located in
London and he is under surveillance.” He
declined to name the suspect.
On the reported negotiation with the
former minister, the source said: “There
is no basis to negotiate with the ex-
Minister in view of the overwhelming
evidence at our disposal. You should ask
yourself what purpose the negotiation
will serve.
“The EFCC is set for the trial of the ex-
minister at home and abroad. It is curious
to be talking of a curious negotiation with
someone who has a prima facie case to
answer.
“The ex-minister has forfeited $153m;
we have had far-reaching investigation
on her involvement in the $115m poll
bribery scandal; we have seized some of
her choice properties and she has
consistently maintained that she is ready
for trial. So, what is the basis for
negotiation when we have a good case?”
The National Crime Agency (NCA) on
October 2, 2015 arrested Mrs. Alison-
Madueke and four others for alleged
bribery and corruption and money
laundering.
The former minister, whose movement
has been restricted to the UK, remains
under investigation.
The NCA found some of the ex-minister’s
brothers and other business partners
complicit in the money laundering
allegation. She was arrested with her
brothers.
Messrs Abiye Agama and Somye Agama
are Mrs Alison-Madueke siblings who
operate some UK-based businesses
hurriedly shut them after the NCA and
the EFCC searchlight became intense.
The two brothers are directors of Hadley
Petroleum Solutions Limited, a company
the authorities believe was used for
money laundering. The other directors
are Ugonna Madueke and Abu Fari.
The company was registered in June 2013
in Manchester, but was dissolved less
than two years later last February
without filing any account.
Abiye, 33, a point man of the firm, is a
computer engineer and manager. He was
a director in 11 other companies. He
resigned from seven of them.
According to EFCC records, some of the
assets linked with Mrs. Alison-Madueke
are:
A block of six units service apartments on
Awolowo Road, Ikoyi
Six units terrace flats in Yaba, Lagos
Mainland
Twin four-bedroom duplexes in Lekki
Phase I
Two duplexes on Banana Island
A duplex in Asokoro District, Abuja
A mini-estate in Mabushi, Abuja
A set of 12 terrace duplexes at Omaremi
Street in Port Harcourt
Large expanse of land at Oniru, Victoria
Island in Lagos
A multi-billion Naira estate in Yenagoa
Two apartments in Dubai marked as J5
Emirates Hills (30million Dirham) and

More Youths To Be Gainfully Employed In 2017 – FG
The Secretary to Government of the
Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal, has said
that President Muhammadu Buhari is
laying a solid foundation for the future
generation through his leadership style.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria,
Lawal, who spoke at a roundtable with
top government officials in Owerri on
Saturday, said that by no fewer than one
million youth will be gainfully employed
by year end.
The SGF was in Owerri on Friday where
he was conferred with a Fellowship at the
5th Convocation of Imo State Polytechnic,
Umuagwo.
He said Buhari’s administration was not
witch-hunting anybody, but wanted to
ensure that impunity and corruption were
eradicated in the country.
Lawal said the Federal Government had
already engaged over 30,000 youths
through its numerous programmes and
job creation, adding that one million
youths would be gainfully employed
before the end of 2017.
He said the president inherited a lot of
challenges ranging from insecurity to
corruption, adding that the situation
needed support and patience to fix the
economy.
He said that everybody must join hand to
rediscover the nation and to put it back to
where it rightfully belong.
He said, “We have commenced a new
journey of rapid and sustainable
economic growth that will usher us
prosperity despite all the challenges.
“Our economy should have been among
the strongest in the world if not for the
high level of corruption which is more
evident in key sectors like education and
health care delivery.”
The SGF said the administration had
recorded huge success since it started the
fight against corruption and had
prosecuted many public office holders.
He added that the Whistleblowing policy
had helped the administration recovered
millions of naira from corrupt Nigerians,
adding that the huge sum would be
reinvested to boost the economy.
Lawal said that government was aware
of the pains Nigerians were passing
through. He assured that government
was doing everything possible to address
it.
“This government has introduced
diversification policy and very soon we
will begin to witness changes as we have
witnessed in rice and wheat production,”
he said.
Gov. Rochas Okorocha said that this was
not the time for Nigerians to weep or
complain in the struggle for nationhood,
but a time to comply.
According to him, Nigeria must write the
history of this recession, just like other
advanced nation did in their own struggle
to greatness.
Okorocha further said Buhari’s main job
was not to build skyscrapers but to lay a
solid foundation for other successors to
build.
He said Nigerians should continue to pray
for the president as his emergence was
divine and the purpose must be fulfilled.
Okrocha also admonished youths to de-
emphasize the search for civil service
jobs, but to see agriculture as the fastest
means to create wealth.

Ebube Muonso Seeks Amnesty For Nnamdi Kanu
The Spiritual Director of Holy Ghost
Adoration Ministry, Uke in Idemili North
Local Government Area of Anambra
State, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, pop
ularly known as Ebube Muonso, has
pleaded with the Federal Government to
grant amnesty to the detained leader of
the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB),
Nnamdi Kanu.
He described the incarceration of Kanu as
an injustice and inequity from the
government.
The clergyman said that addressing
various critical issues like injustice,
marginalisation and others which fuel the
urge to secede would have far-reaching
effect than holding other people captive.
Obimma took the anti-corruption war of
the Buhari-led Federal Government to
the cleaners over alleged lopsidedness.
He spoke at the end of a 33-day prayer
session with the theme: “My Year of
Divine Enthronement” organised by his
ministry. The event was allegedly
attended by about 1.5 million participants
across the globe.
He preached from 9pm to 9am and
attended to over 600 participants after
the prayer session.
Two deaf and dumb participants: Paul
Ukachukwu and Bernard Mmaduka, said
that they received their healing as they
could hear and speak.
Obimma said: “The President (Buhari) is
partial in his anti-corruption war. For him,
the politicians in the ruling APC are saints
but the ones in the PDP, APGA, and other
political parties are corrupt. Let there be
equality; let love lead Nigeria.”
Obimma, a Catholic Priest with Onitsha
Archdiocese and Parish Priest of Blessed
Iwene Tansi Parish, Umudioka, Dunukofia
in Anambra State, lamented that with the
exchange rate of the dollar to Naira
worsening daily, Nigerians were finding it
very difficult to afford the basic require
ments of life even as many industries and
businesses are have shut down.
He continued: “My message is for our
country Nigeria whereby some people
are under oppression. We say we’re one
Nigeria but that’s only in words. I am
advocating for equity, justice, and fair
ness.
“And again, God has absolute power;
holding other people captives just like
Nnamdi Kanu who is languishing in prison.
And everybody is passive about that
even Ohanaeze Ndigbo. Injustice is in
justice.
“I pray that the Federal Government will
grant him (Kanu) amnesty. As you can
see, there is hunger in the land. The
President and others should alleviate hun
ger in the land. The people are dying
daily. Prices of goods are skyrocketing.
As a priest, I’m not happy when I see my
flock suffer,” he stressed.
